Karim Yengsep, DMA

Equally at home with jazz, Western-European classical, and World music, over the past decade Karim led and played in a variety of ensembles whose repertoire explored the music of Brazil, Argentina, and American jazz from hard bop to fusion, and was a featured guest during live broadcasts on Illinois Public Media WILL FM. In 2010, he executive produced and performed on Bossa Nuevo, a CD released by Teal Creek Music (TC-2021).

He studied bass at Western Oregon University (BA in Music '05) as a recipient of International Cultural Service Program scholarship, and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he received both Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance and Master of Music in Double Bass Performance degrees as a recipient of full-tuition waiver awards. His bass teachers include Dan Schulte, Michael Cameron, Larry Gray and, most recently, Virginia Dixon.

Prior to relocating to Southern California in 2018, Dr. Yengsep taught bass at a premier Suzuki violin school in West Chicago suburbs, Western Springs School of Talent Education, and coached Jazz Band Workshop for the Pre-College Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence (PEOPLE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a Suzuki registered teacher and is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the Orange County Strings Branch of the California Suzuki Music Association.
